About the SLBA
The official professional body for Barristers & Solicitors in Sierra Leone
Who we are
The Sierra Leone Bar Association is the national professional association representing legal practitioners in Sierra Leone. It brings together Barristers and Solicitors committed to the rule of law, professional excellence, ethical legal practice, access to justice, and the protection of constitutional democracy.
Sierra Leone has a rich legal history. From its early role in the development of formal courts in West Africa to the establishment of its modern justice system after independence, the country's legal profession has played a central part in shaping public life, defending rights, and strengthening the administration of justice.
As the collective voice of the legal profession, the Sierra Leone Bar Association exists to promote and protect the interests of its members while also serving the wider public interest. The Association's mandate includes reviewing matters affecting the legal profession, contributing to legal reform, supporting improvements in the administration of law, and engaging with institutions on issues affecting justice, human rights, and good governance.
Over the years, the Bar has served not only as a professional body for lawyers, but also as a guardian of the rule of law. It has contributed to public debate, supported community legal services, advocated on human-rights issues, and engaged with government and justice-sector institutions on matters affecting the legal system.
The Association continues to uphold the dignity of the legal profession by encouraging professionalism, integrity, learning, service, and respect for the law. Its members include practitioners across private practice, public service, academia, civil society, and other areas of legal work.
Today, the Sierra Leone Bar Association remains committed to building a strong, independent, ethical, and modern legal profession that serves both its members and the people of Sierra Leone.
